What a Michelin star means, and where to find all 19 in Texas
All 19 Texas restaurants with a Michelin star for 2026 are in or near the cities we connect. The Michelin Guide began in 1900 as a way to get more people on the road, and its stars still rate a meal by how far it is worth going.

On October 8th, 2026, the Michelin Guide gave a star to 19 Texas restaurants: seven in Austin, five in Houston, three in San Antonio, two in Dallas, and one each in Fort Worth and Spring. Every one of them holds a single star.
Because we move people between Texas cities, the part of the Michelin Guide we find most interesting is its first idea: a meal can be a reason to travel. A tire company made the guide to get more people on the road, and its stars still rate a restaurant by how far it is worth going for.
The Michelin Guide began in 1900 as a free book for drivers
The Michelin Guide was written to sell tires. Brothers André and Édouard Michelin gave away 35,000 copies of the first edition in 1900, when France had fewer than 3,000 cars. It listed hotels, restaurants, mechanics and gas stations, so that drivers would travel further and wear out more tires. In 1920, André Michelin saw copies of the guide holding up a workbench in a garage, and Michelin started charging 7 francs for it. The Michelin Guide still measures a restaurant by the question it asked drivers in 1900: how far is it worth going?
One, two and three Michelin stars, and what each one means
Michelin began awarding stars in 1926, using a single star, and expanded to three stars in 1931. The definitions are written in terms of travel:
- One star: a very good restaurant in its category.
- Two stars: excellent cooking, worth a detour.
- Three stars: exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey.
Michelin inspectors visit and review restaurants anonymously. They judge five things: the quality of the ingredients, the harmony of flavors, the mastery of technique, the personality of the chef in the cooking, and consistency across the menu and over time. The Bib Gourmand is a separate award for good cooking at an accessible price. A Michelin star is a judgment about the food on the plate, not the room, the service or the price.
Texas has 19 one star restaurants and none with two or three stars
The Michelin Guide came to Texas in 2024, and the 2026 selection is its third, with 149 restaurants listed. Three restaurants earned a first star this year: Fabrik and Kappo Kappo in Austin, and Goldee's Bar-B-Q in Fort Worth. La Barbecue in Austin, which held a star in 2025, is no longer on the starred list. No Texas restaurant holds two or three stars, so every starred restaurant in the state carries the single star Michelin first awarded in 1926. Four of the 19 Texas stars belong to barbecue restaurants: InterStellar BBQ and LeRoy and Lewis Barbecue in Austin, Goldee's Bar-B-Q in Fort Worth, and CorkScrew BBQ in Spring.
Austin has seven Michelin star restaurants
- Barley Swine, on Burnet Road, serves a seasonal tasting menu. Stefan Davis of Barley Swine won the 2026 Michelin Outstanding Service Award for Texas.
- Craft Omakase, in Rosedale, is a sushi restaurant with a lounge in front and a counter in back.
- Fabrik, in Tarrytown, serves only vegan food from chef Je Wallerstein, built on produce from Texas farms. Fabrik is new to the star list in 2026.
- Hestia, downtown on West 3rd Street, cooks over live fire on a hearth in an open kitchen.
- InterStellar BBQ, on Ranch Road 620 in northwest Austin, is pitmaster John Bates's barbecue, cooked low and slow over post oak.
- Kappo Kappo, in the Austin Proper Hotel, is a Japanese counter run by twin brothers Haru and Gohei. Kappo Kappo entered the Michelin Guide in 2026 with a star.
- LeRoy and Lewis Barbecue, in South Austin, started as a food truck in 2017 and is known for going beyond brisket and beef rib.
Austin has more Michelin stars than any other Texas city in 2026.
Houston and Spring have six Michelin star restaurants
- BCN Taste & Tradition, off Richmond Avenue, serves contemporary Spanish cooking. Michelin's inspectors single out the grilled octopus with pommes purée.
- Le Jardinier Houston, at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, serves the French cooking of Chef Alain Verzeroli, which Michelin describes as verdant.
- March, on Westheimer Road, builds its tasting menu and drinks around one region of the Mediterranean at a time.
- Musaafer, in the Galleria, serves contemporary Indian cooking. Michelin's inspectors recommend the Malabari fish curry with paratha.
- Tatemó, on Dacoma Street, started as a tortilleria and now serves a tasting menu built on heirloom corn from across Mexico. Tatemó has no liquor license, so guests bring their own wine.
- CorkScrew BBQ, in Spring, north of Houston, is a barbecue restaurant known for its brisket and beef ribs, and for long lines.
Houston and Spring together hold six of the 19 Michelin stars in Texas.
San Antonio has three Michelin star restaurants
- Isidore, in the Pearl District, is a steakhouse with an open kitchen and a hearth for cooking over live fire.
- Mixtli, on South Alamo Street, is a Mexican tasting menu restaurant from chefs Diego Galicia and Rico Torres.
- Nicōsi, also on Newell Avenue at the Pearl, serves a tasting menu made only of desserts, at a counter where phones and photos are not allowed.
Two of San Antonio's three Michelin stars, Isidore and Nicōsi, share an address at the Pearl.
Dallas and Fort Worth have three Michelin star restaurants
- Mamani, on Howell Street in Dallas, serves contemporary French cooking à la carte.
- Tatsu Dallas, in the Continental Gin Building in Deep Ellum, is an Edomae sushi counter with 10 seats and an omakase of about 14 pieces.
- Goldee's Bar-B-Q, in Fort Worth, cooks Black Angus brisket over local post oak and opens only a few days a week. Goldee's moved up from a Bib Gourmand to a star in 2026 and is the only restaurant in Fort Worth with one.
Dallas and Fort Worth hold three of the 19 Michelin stars in Texas.
Every Michelin star in Texas is a few hours from another Texas city
The 19 starred restaurants in Texas sit in four metro areas, and none is far from the others. On our schedule, a ride from Houston to Austin takes about two hours and 40 minutes, Dallas to Austin about three hours and 10 minutes, and Austin to San Antonio about one hour and 20 minutes. That is the kind of trip the Michelin brothers wrote their first guide for in 1900: far enough to need a reason, close enough to make for a meal.
